DEAR WORKING PROFESSIONL: EACH ONE OF US IS ON AN INDIVIDUAL FINANCIAL JOURNEY

 It is said it is in the moment of decisions that our destinies are decided. An individual from a poor family decides to complete their studies for a better future and another individual from a wealthy family decides to gamble their school fees. When we learn about the consequences of our choices we are likely to achieve fundamental shifts in our lives.

Oprah Winfrey was born in a poor family but this did not deter her from dreaming big. Today she is one of the wealthiest women on earth. I have met a number of young professionals who make financial mistakes and they blame it on the external environment. When we  misuse our finances we should not place the blame  on family and other external influences. Ultimately our financial destiny is in our hands. I have seen farmers who earn less than the normal working professionals save in more than one savings group. This is because they have put the destiny of their financial lives in their hands.

At university there is a tendency for students to live beyond their means just to please their peers but this ends up leaving financial wounds to the students. A student can start a small business using the savings they have made but without adequate financial literacy many of the youths who are future leaders spend money without a clear plan.

It is critical that a working professional spends money with precaution since the future is uncertain. Who remembers the time of the lockdown when everyone was indoors? There were many cases of domestic violence and mental health simply because people could not cope up with life. I remember two young men burnt themselves simply because they could not cope up with the high costs of living. 

It is critical that as we work we think about the uncertain future and know that our financial destiny is in our hands.

 I remember during the Trainer of Trainers training conducted by Bank of Uganda we were encouraged to develop a savings plan. This was a key development because without a plan we may live in financial darkness.  Joseph (not real name) set up a retail shop and after a month he closed it because of lack of customers. The question is, what went wrong?
