THE YOUTHS HOLD A LOT OF POTENTIAL AND REQUIRE MENTORSHIP
I am a firm believer that each individual has a lot of potential and if it is well nurtured it can make a lot of difference. Uganda is a country with one of the youngest populations in the world. The key question is are these youths maximizing their potential? Every year over 40,000 students graduate from university and other institutions of higher learning. There is a lot of excitement after graduation. This is justifiable because it never easy to graduate but the question to ask is what is the fate of the graduates after graduation?
In his book After University What Next ? Ambrose Kibuuka challenges a university student to analyze their university qualifications. A degree is an opening for a university student to explore the world. The founder of Psalms Industries started it as a university project. Little did he know that it would emerge into a big company that employs thousands of Ugandans. What if he had doubted his idea, we would have missed out? I have realized that so many youths have great ideas but they fear to manifest them. They have gold in their hands but they do not know how to mine it out.
Let me give an example. If a student is pursuing a degree in Business Administration, what are the odds of becoming successful in life? Small businesses are the heart of the economy and this means that this they will require business experts to provide them with solutions to their challenges. For example many businesses struggle to file returns . A business student can design a solution to this dilemma and sell it to the business owners. Instead of the graduate waiting for a formal job he or she must be found busy solving business challenges. Businesses are established to solve social problems. The dominant thought among graduates is that they will find a ready job after graduation. This is proving to be hard. Graduates are required to be creative and start small as they look at the big picture towards their future.
For Uganda's youths to maximize their potential , there is a need to seek career guidance services right from primary school. The mistakes in youth development start right from the beginning where children are encourage to cram instead of using the knowledge acquired to solve social challenges.
The youths of Uganda hold a lot of potential but this can be realized if they are well mentored.
