WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR A WORKING PROFESSIONAL TO REFLECT ON THEIR FINANCIAL JOURNEY

 It was Aristotle who noted that an unexamined life is not worth living. We live in a fast paced world where it is easy to lose focus on the most important events of our lives. Today's financial landscape is fast changing and it requires an intentional mindset to overcome the most pressing challenges. To show how important it is to reflect on our financial journey, during the Covid-19 season two young men burnt themselves because they could not cope with the high cost of living. It means that the financial situation can even lead to death if not handled with care. Though handling finances is a personal responsibility, without adequate care and attention it can become a nightmare. 

How come many working professionals earn a salary every month but they struggle to manage it yet we find a market vendor who earns less that a corporate able to use their finances well. That contrast needs to be analyzed. I have also visited microentrepreneurs who save regularly in more than one group and i wonder how they are able to accumulate money yet they earn little. It was a lesson to me that it is not about how much one earns but the desire to make life better.

Throughout the year we get a chance to make various financial decisions some of which are small and others are big. The question is do we get time to reflect on these decisions? Most financially successful people take time to reflect on their financial journeys and this gives them a chance to adjust in case they make mistakes. They even read books about finance and attend seminars related to financial literacy.

I have so many testimonies of youths and women who attended the financial literacy trainings that I conducted and have changed their financial destinies. If it can happen to them, it can also happen to you. It is worth it to spend time reflecting on our financial decisions on a personal, family and community level. Without this awareness we can not achieve much.

A SAVINGS PLAN CAN AID IN FINANCIAL ADVANCEMENT

 I remember during the Trainer of Trainers training conducted by Bank of Uganda we were encouraged to develop a savings plan. This was a key development because without a plan we may live in financial darkness. WE CELEBRATE GRADUATION BUT AFTER THAT WHAT NEXT ?

 Uganda is officially dominated by young people. Over 50 %of the population are youths. With a high population the job market also shrinks yet people need to survive. It is the means of survival that create social pressure. The unemployment dilemma in the country can be dissected from different angles and each person or all stakeholders have a critical role to play.  Universities and other institutions of higher learning produce over 300,000 graduates per year. The job creation rate is about 70,000 jobs per year. This means that the job market is narrow. It is a common sight to see over 100 applicants for one job.
