DEAR WORKING PROFESSIONALS: LET US TAKE STOCK OF OUR FINANCIAL MISTAKES IN THE PAST YEAR

There is no better feeling than making it to a new year. The past year was full of challenges in many dimensions. People lost their lives to accidents. The fact that we have made it into the new year is evidence that God has better plans for each one of us.

The focus of this article is taking stock of the past year in the area of finance. Aristotle noted that an unexamined life is not worth living. It means that if we are to advance financially in 2026 we can not afford to stay the same in terms of our financial knowledge. There are very many successful people in the area of finance and we can capitalize on that to become financially wiser and responsible. A number of working professionals have the capacity to multiply their income. The question is, do they have adequate financial knowledge on the investments they plan to undertake.

A number of working professionals start businesses in their villages without first undertaking enough research and in the end they lose it all. They manage the businesses on phone and in the end the businesses collapse. Perhaps as a working professional it is advisable that before we start a business we should even acquire a mentor who will advise us on the critical success factors that can aid us in making a viable enterprise.

The other mistake that a number of working professionals make is to work in isolation. Most successful leaders belong to groups where the share knowledge on where to invest and learn from each other than thinking they can invest single handedly. A few years a go there is an online women investment club that collapsed after the founder duping a number of women to invest in this scheme. At the end of the day they lost their hard earned money. With adequate financial knowledge and training such schemes can be detected. For example before one invests, there is a need for due diligence on the governance of the scheme.

In 2026 we can ill afford to waste any coin as working professionals. We need to know that every coin counts in the wealth creation journey. For the working professionals who are just starting their careers especially recent graduates it is very critical to embrace mentorship and continuous learning.
