AS A GENERATION WE SHOULD RESPECT HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
We live in a generation of instant results. Instant food, instant success and movies. Where as I advocate for instant wealth creation, the question is , are we deviating from the laws of nature? For the past 5 years I have been training youths in financial literacy training. The good trait that I have found out is that Uganda's youths are very enterprising and energetic. However I have noted that there is a general tendency to disregard humble beginnings. A certain youth recently noted that he does not mind where he gets money from but what matters is whether he has the money. It seems money which does not have eyes or brain is making some youths lose their authentic identity.
The purpose of the article is to make the youths who form the majority in the country that humble beginnings are very important in building a strong foundation when it comes to amassing wealth. Wealth should also no be limited to physical cash. The wealthiest people in the world spend a lot of time reading about wealth. It is no wonder that they are able to sustain their wealth. I read the book by Professor Gordon Wavamunno about his wealth journey and appreciated that his father took him to an Indian family to learn secrets of managing a business. This explains why Professor Wavamunno has been able to sustain his business empire. Today we have graduates who expect to become billionaires overnight. In the end they misuse their funds in unplanned expenses such as gambling. In fact a recent article in the New Vision that appeared on 24th May 2025 showed that a number of youths were addicted to gambling to the extent that some drop out of school. If the majority of the youths are addicted to get rich schemes, where is the destiny of the country.
Today prison cells are full of youths who attempted to snatch phones and drug dealing. Is this the real purpose of life? Uganda's youths need mentorship especially in the area of finance. Most of today's successful businessmen who have created massive business empires have done so because they were mentored at a young age. The youths must be mentored to develop a long term perspective to wealth creation.
HOW TO DEVELOP A LONG TERM PERSPECTIVE TO WEALTH.
1.Have a long term vision for your finances
2.Create an emergency fund
3.Live within your means
4.Develop a budget
5.Associate with successful people
6.Save as you earn
7.Join a financial master mind
8.Have a positive attitude
9.Seek financial mentorship
10. Learn from past mistakes
We live in a generation that generally views success from the top. But we can never defy the laws of nature .Every great achievement starts small. Grameen Bank which is a big microfinance started as a small microfinance project. Equity Bank which is one of the biggest financial conglomerates started as a small building society .This should motivate us to start small.
