WHY ABUNDANT LEADERSHIP MATTERS IN AFRICA

I was fortunate to attend an Abundant Leadership training organized by Kurumbuka Leadership Institute. It was an amazing seminar where we were challenged to focus on our mindsets. To be a good leader we have to be intentional in building our mindsets. This is because as noted by Dr .John Maxwell , everything rises and falls on leadership. The best way to develop an abundant minded mindset we need to start from an individual level.

As a financial literacy trainer I have trained countless youths across the country .One of the lessons that I have picked is that they way we view life determines most of our results. A number of leaders see the world as half full or full of challenges. This means that when we focus on lack our creativity is undermined. As I move across the various parts of Uganda I realize that Uganda has very many youths with a lot of potential. However many of these youths focus on what they lack. This encourages a dependency mentality. This explains why a number of able bodied youths sell of their plots of land and invest in quick get rich schemes.

Without an abundance mindset our resources are underutilized. Many youths have graduated with good academic grades. The question is why is youth unemployment high? Why is it that some of the youths who have never stepped into university are creating successful businesses while the graduates with fresh graduates are second guessing themselves? Why is it that most youths have not informed savings and investment groups to start with what they have instead of waiting for external parties. I know of a group of university students who formed an investment club that is now involved in real estate and worth billions in assets. The fatalistic attitude of some of the youths has made them neglect their  villages to come to the  already congested urban areas. When I move through various parts of Kampala I see so many youths who are doing nothing in the morning. Others are taking alcohol during time of work,

If we are to change the narrative we need to mentor the youths who form the biggest percentage of the population.

4 WAYS TO INCREASE ABUNADANT LEADERSHIP

1.Develop a long term perspective to life

2. Leadership training should start at home

3.Focus on service to humanity

4.Take on risks.

Africa is one of the richest continents in the world. Countries such as Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have a lo of resources but are plagued by poverty. It is Africans who will focus on developing and enhancing their skills that will change the narrative as discussed above.
