AS IRON SHARPENS IRON EVERY PERSON NEEDS MENTORSHIP TO GROW THEIR LEADERSHIP

 When I read about great men and women who have changed the world most of them have mentors who changed their life perspective from an early age. When one reads about the great leadership guru Dr .John Maxwell he attributes his success to his father who intentionally mentored him from an early age. He exposed him to great books and conferences where he learnt best practices in leadership. This means that no one can succeed on their own. There are so many people who have walked the journey that we want to walk and why should we reinvent the wheel?

For the last 5 years I have been providing financial literacy across the country especially to the youths who form the majority of the country. One of the great lesson that I have learnt is that the youths of Uganda are very enterprising and full of potential. However what I have seen missing in some of them is the intentionality in seeking mentorship. A case in point is a university student whom I asked whether they had a career mentor and they had none. Their view was that they will get one after university. I told them that would be too late. This is because the world is too complex to navigate alone. One of the biggest bottlenecks for seeking mentorship is pride. That is the tendency to think we shall get all answers on our own. We spend a lot of time on certain issues that we can resolve in a shorter time. Again we can not leave our lives to be mentored by only social media. We need to intentionally seek the wisdom of tested men and women who can groom us into better leaders. Every person on earth always has the potential to do better. If others with less advantages than us can make it in life what about us who have been created in God's image.

Many financial lives have been positively altered simply because a person out there got courage to seek financial mentorship. A case in point of a youth who attended a financial literacy training that I conducted . This youth was financially distressed before he met me but today he is doing well financially. He regularly contacts me and I have always linked him to financial institutions for assistance. No financial situation is irredeemable.

A SAVINGS PLAN CAN AID IN FINANCIAL ADVANCEMENT

 I remember during the Trainer of Trainers training conducted by Bank of Uganda we were encouraged to develop a savings plan. This was a key development because without a plan we may live in financial darkness. WE CELEBRATE GRADUATION BUT AFTER THAT WHAT NEXT ?

 Uganda is officially dominated by young people. Over 50 %of the population are youths. With a high population the job market also shrinks yet people need to survive. It is the means of survival that create social pressure. The unemployment dilemma in the country can be dissected from different angles and each person or all stakeholders have a critical role to play.  Universities and other institutions of higher learning produce over 300,000 graduates per year. The job creation rate is about 70,000 jobs per year. This means that the job market is narrow. It is a common sight to see over 100 applicants for one job.
