CHANGING OUR FINANCIAL CIRCUMSTANCES REQUIRES COURAGE

 A certain youth asked me a question, how come I work hard but have failed to change my financial situation? It was not an easy question to answer but I encouraged her not to give up. We are living in hard economic times and the effects of the lock down and Covid 19 are still being faced. When it comes to changing our financial situation it starts with building up our mind. The mind is the greatest weapon that we have to either build success or failure. Generations have built up wealth simply by choosing to build up their minds. The courage to make a decision that from today onwards you will make wise financial decisions is one of the greatest decisions that you will ever make. 

It takes courage to decide to be different. Society wants us to behave like everyone. The key question is, is every thing that is done by the masses correct. If culture informs us that we should always be dependent on others, can that trait make us wealthy. Some cultural stereotypes have to be challenged. The issue of time is another big animal in Africa. I have arrived to conduct financial literacy training and most of the trainees have not turned up simply because of African time. Others base their earning potential on age. How come Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook became a billionaire at a young age when many of our university students say that they will start building companies after university. How come many of our youths are unaware that it is during your youthful ages that you should build your financial knowledge for a better future. A number of youths misuse the little that they have on unplanned ventures . They divert the seed capital on luxuries and wonder why their financial situation is not improving. 

It takes courage to change our financial situation. We have seen some international sports men and artists who had a lot of money but since they lacked direction on how to use the funds they spent it recklessly on impressing the rest of the world and today they are financially struggling. It takes courage to know that one must spend with a budget. It takes courage for one to hire a financial coach who can guide them on how to grow their money.

HOW TO CHANGE OUR FINANCIAL STUATION

1.Think long term

2.Create a budget

3.Develop a positive attitude

4.Know that financial advancement is not a destination but a journey.

5.Learn from past failures 

6. Create an emergency fund

7.Learn from the best.

8.Avoid instant gratification

9. Research before you invest

10.Seek mentorship.

11.Know that money is a seed.


It takes courage to know that one can grow their money. Some of the biggest financial institutions started as small entities  and today they are financial conglomerates. A case in point is Equity Bank which started as a small building society in Kenya and today is a financial conglomerate. No situation is too hard to reverse if only we are determined to do so.

A SAVINGS PLAN CAN AID IN FINANCIAL ADVANCEMENT

 I remember during the Trainer of Trainers training conducted by Bank of Uganda we were encouraged to develop a savings plan. This was a key development because without a plan we may live in financial darkness. WE CELEBRATE GRADUATION BUT AFTER THAT WHAT NEXT ?

 Uganda is officially dominated by young people. Over 50 %of the population are youths. With a high population the job market also shrinks yet people need to survive. It is the means of survival that create social pressure. The unemployment dilemma in the country can be dissected from different angles and each person or all stakeholders have a critical role to play.  Universities and other institutions of higher learning produce over 300,000 graduates per year.
