WHEN THEY GOOGLE YOUR NAME WHAT COMES UP?

A friend of mine wrote an article where he asked when they Google someone's name what comes up? It was an opportunity for me to evaluate and reflect on my impact on society. Indeed there are people who are long gone but up to now their names are still sound. These include the late Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela and Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. We have a lot to learn from these leaders. They used their gifts to serve the world. We remember Thomas Edison for being persistent and inventing the light build. There are others who are alive . We know John Maxwell as a leadership coach. We know Oprah Winfrey as a wealthy and media icon. We remember Tiger Woods for his golf expertise. We know Michael Jordan for basket ball.

I have met a number of youths who are experts in knowing the most well paid footballers in the premier league and sometimes they even bet their hard earned money about these superstars . Iam not trying to undermine the youths but it is high time we reflected on the impact that we have on society. One time I asked a university graduate what they do after lectures and they told me they just sleep. Surely I believe that apart from studies university students have a lot to contribute to society. Many university graduates complain that companies look for experience but even at university a student can amass experience even before graduation. For example a business student can volunteer their free time to file returns for a company if given chance. A community development student can volunteer with a Community Based Organization. A pianist can volunteer at a local church or hotel. Every university course must be dissected by a student to find out what they can do even without being paid. The biggest challenge with some youths is that they only attribute real work to one where they are being paid. Some people have got jobs out of volunteering with certain organizations. The aim of voluntary work is to gain skills that will help a person in the long run.

The world is looking for problem solvers. Those are the people who will be highly paid while others who do not solve problems will stay irrelevant in society. I have seen able bodied youths being wasted due to drugs simply because they have nothing constructive they are doing in society. We need a generation of youths who mobilize their colleagues to start community projects that can add value to society. Did we know that Music Dance and Drama was once an undermined course but today most musicians are some of the most well paid personalities in Uganda? This means that everybody is valuable in their circumstances for as long as they change their perspective. Many youths have sold off their valuable land to buy boda bodas . These same youths can utilize their land for agricultural activities.
