THE LINK BETWEEN ATTITUDE AND FINANCIAL ADVANCEMENT

 John Maxwell noted that attitude determines altitude. When we closely analyze this statement it has a lot of relationship in our personal journey towards financial advancement. As a Financial literacy Trainer I have the privilege of interacting with several people especially the youths. One thing that I have observed that is that if we have wrong thoughts about money then our efforts towards elevating our finances may be jeopardized. For example a certain youth said they do not need a bank account. This statement speaks volumes about this person's attitude towards financial safety. By keeping money at home this person has unrestricted access towards it and he or she is likely to spend it. When some youths are invited for financial literacy trainings they view it as a waste of time. But I have observed that the most successful people are always attending workshops to get new knowledge on how to improve their finances. The financial landscape is fast evolving and we need new knowledge all the time.

A negative attitude will inform the brain that any initiatives towards personal growth are not necessary. It will discourage us from making wise choices about money. It will stop us from seeking advice from successful people. It will stop us from tracking our expenses and we are likely to spend our funds without any budget. It will make us think that when we invest in get rich schemes we shall become overnight billionaires.

HOW TO IMPROVE OUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS MONEY

1.Have a long term view of our finances

2.Seek financial mentorship

3. Live with in your means

4.Track your expenses

5.Develop a budget

6.Save as you earn

7.Invest in personal development

8.Research before you invest.

9.Open an account in a regulated financial institution

Attitude determines altitude. I have seen market vendors who do not earn much build houses with meagre resources. With the right attitude towards money we can alter our financial circumstances. With a wrong attitude, our financial circumstances might worsen.

A SAVINGS PLAN CAN AID IN FINANCIAL ADVANCEMENT

 I remember during the Trainer of Trainers training conducted by Bank of Uganda we were encouraged to develop a savings plan. This was a key development because without a plan we may live in financial darkness. WE CELEBRATE GRADUATION BUT AFTER THAT WHAT NEXT ?

 Uganda is officially dominated by young people. Over 50 %of the population are youths. With a high population the job market also shrinks yet people need to survive. It is the means of survival that create social pressure. The unemployment dilemma in the country can be dissected from different angles and each person or all stakeholders have a critical role to play.  Universities and other institutions of higher learning produce over 300,000 graduates per year.
