THE ABUSE OF GOD GIVEN POTENTIAL
Ambrose Ongol in his book Live Your Purpose notes that the average human being has no idea about their ability. This is evidenced by the massive abuse of potential among the youths and in society. I normally spend a lot of time talking to youths in financial literacy training. I can attest that many of them need to be reminded of their God given potential. A young boy was killed because he was involved in murdering a prominent citizen in this country. A mother in Kayunga was arrested for dumping her baby in a pit latrine in Kayung District. A suspected witch doctor in Kiboga District was arrested for killing two (2) innocent young children. A man used a panga to cut innocent young children because he wanted free money from the parents. All these cases show the abuse of human potential.
When a person does not know their God given potential they are likely to become a victim of circumstances. When one makes research about leaders who have left a mark in history, these are people who discovered their purpose and lived an intentional life. In particular I want to use the example of the African icon, Nelson Mandela who left his comfortable life and decided to serve humanity. For 27 years he was in prison but he refused to quit fighting for his bigger agenda. Today we have youths who have limited faith. A youth gives up on searching for a job simply because he or she failed the first interview. In a world that is bent on informing us that every thing can be achieved overnight pursuing our God given potential is likely to be forfeited or cut short.
WAYS TO DISCOVERING GOD GIVEN POTENTIAL
1. It begins with God. It is the manufacturer who knows the original design. In the same way God is the source of our potential and we should consult Him.
2.Seek mentorship and coaching. When one reads books of some of the leaders who have influenced the world, they are ruthless in seeking mentorship and successful coaching. As humans we have so many blind spots. So a mentor is our guide and can shorten our learning curve. A case in point is Dr. John Maxwell whose life changed because his father exposed him to so many mentors such as John Wooden.
3.Think long term. It is Brian Tracy who notes in his book 100 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws of Business Success that all successful leaders think long term. So in pursuing our God given potential long term thinking is a wise choice.
Each one of us has an infinite potential. Unfortunately it is likely to be abused if it is not discovered and nurtured.
