WE SHOULD HAVE A BIGGER PURPOSE BEYOND THE ACADEMIC TRANSCRIPT
As an activist for youth employability it has come to my attention that a number of university students require personal mentorship and guidance if they are to benefit from their stay at university. At a recent seminar that I presented to first year students at a certain university I was shocked when I asked the students to name their top 3 goals why they were at university and it seemed a " tough" task. One may quickly assume that simply because a student has joined university they have a clear purpose beyond the classroom That is far from the truth. A certain student almost got a retake when he did not put much attention to the assignment that they had been given. Instead he used most of his time to chat with friends. The marks he got were a wakeup call for him to work harder.
I have also realized after interacting with a number of university students that many are not aware of how volatile the job market is. One of the greatest fears of any graduate should be lacking a job after university. But what are steps that a student can take to get a job in this unpredictable economy? It requires a student who is willing to be coached and advised. Some students get this lesson too late. Some feel that mentorship is not important since they are already "adults". If presidents of nations have advisors, then I believe it is worth it for any university student to subject themselves to real mentorship. The lack of accountability among a number of university students has seen many underperform and hate the courses that they chose. We have seen courses such as Music Dance and Drama undermined yet in the United States the entertainment industry is highly respected. Could it be that university students give more respect to passing exams than applying the knowledge acquired to solve social problems. Every year over 400,000 students graduate from over 30 universities. The question is, why do we have an increasing generation of educated graduates? What can be done to address this state of affairs?
How can we produce a generation of graduates who seek out opportunities rather than opting to maintain the status quo Am I trying to bury my head in the sand? No. What I am trying to say that amidst the glaring challenges of youth unemployment, something can be done to solve the challenge of youth unemployment. The population of youths is growing at a fast speed and we need solutions to their challenges urgently.
