EVERY PERSON HASTHE POTENTIAL TO MAKE A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE
There is a group of 16 rural men and women in Uganda which teamed up and formed a savings group. Their reason for setting up the group was because they were tired of sleeping on mats. Today what started as a small savings group has expanded to other 8districts and is serving and impacting the community. When one reads about such humble beginnings he or she is encouraged to make a positive difference. When one reads about the story of Equity Bank, he or she is inspired to take action. Equity Bank started as a small building society in Kenya and today is one of the largest financial conglomerates in Africa serving over15 million customers.
The educated class has a lot to offer to the world. The degrees that we amassed are not meant to only get us formal jobs but there is a lot of knowledge that we acquired that can help transform the communities. I have spent 5 years providing grassroot financial literacy training and I should say that it is both an exciting and challenging job. Changing the mindsets of the community in relation to handling their finances requires passion, dedication and commitment. There are so many financial needs in the community and it requires selfless leaders to make a contribution.
In a nation where over 70% of the population is below 30 years it is critical that the youths are trained and nurtured to solve community needs. Today we find so many youths including graduates at crossroads. They have degrees but they do not know what next for their lives. This can explain the increase in gambling and crime. Idle youths are a danger to the nation and urgent action needs to be taken. The youths must be supported with free financial literacy training and access to capital to either start or grow their businesses.
Today very many youths are involved in get rich schemes simply because they have lost the power of appreciating hard work. The youths are waiting for a lot of capital to start businesses. But we need to know that most of the biggest companies of the world started as ideas. These include Sony and Coca Cola.
Everyone can make a positive difference in the world.
