IT DOES NOT MATTER WHERE YOUR BUSINESS STARTS FROM

Everybody desires to become successful in life. Bookstores are full of books about stories of entrepreneurs who began from scratch and are now successful entrepreneurs. Iam motivated by the story of Professor Gordon Wavamunno who gives a detailed account of how he started his journey and is now a very successful Ugandan businessman. Iam inspired by the story of Oprah Winfrey who started off life as a poor little girl in the United States of America and today is one of the most successful black American ladies. What about Dr. Washington Carver who was a black American who read books on candle but he is remembered for having initiated over 100 patents out of potato.

Iam also motivated by the story of Equity Bank which started as a small building society in Kenya and today it is one of the largest financial conglomerates in Africa. The key question from all these successful stories is, was it an easy journey for them? Not really. For example Oprah Winfrey was driven by a great vision despite her poor family background. As a financial literacy coach and trainer I have spent the last 5 years training and mentoring youths across the country in financial literacy and entrepreneurship education. One of the key lessons that I have learnt is that the youths are very resilient and have great ideas. A number of them have started great social enterprises that are solving community problems. The biggest need that I have also discovered among young people is that they want quick results. Due to this they tend to forfeit their valuable ideas that can transform the world for easier pursuits. The rise is gambling is a result of a generation of youths who have been raised to believe that greatness can be achieved without intentional hard work.

The key message to the youths who form the majority in the country is that nothing great sprouts overnight. Every business requires a strong and long term vision for it to raise the bar. Uganda is one of the most entrepreneurial countries in the world and unfortunately most of the start ups do not see their second birth day. We need to address this this dilemma if we are to reduce youth unemployment and the rising crime rate.
