YOUR THOUGHTS HAVE POWER

There is power in human potential. This world is full of examples of people whom the world had given up on but went ahead and did incredible feats during their time. A classic example is Dr. Ben Carson who is a neurosurgeon who is remembered for separating the Siamese twins. A brief history about Dr. Ben Carson is that he was born in a poor family where his mother had to do menial work to support the family. Ben Carson was always the last in class due to lack of a clear direction. With the mother's intervention and encouragement, Ben Carson started to go to the library during holidays .He picked interest in sciences and that is when his story changed. He started to top his class and went on to become a medical student at the prestigious Yale University. When one reads Think Big by Dr. Ben Carson the full details are there.

The story above shows us the power of human potential. It teaches us never to write off people. The worst behvior is even discounting ourselves especially through negative self talk. The inner voices of "Iam not good enough" are very prevalent in society. We tend to compare ourselves with others yet God created each one of us differently. I highly doubt if Baraq Obama would have become the first black American President if he did not believe in his dream. Dr. Myles Munroe noted that the wealthiest place in the world are not the gold mines but the cemetery. This is where books that were to be written ,companies and hospitals that were not constructed reside. He noted that is very tragic. I have seen young people who do not have the courage to pursue their dreams. They prefer to be on the sidelines as the few dare to pursue their dreams.

We are encouraged by Stephen Covey in his book the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People that every creation is first in the mind and then in reality. It seems as we grow up we get scared of dreaming big. Children are not afraid of setting big goals but adults will be advised by most of their peers to get "realistic". But how would the world be if the Wright Brothers had listened to their critics. How would the world be if Thomas Edison had given up on the attempts of making the light bulb. Some of the greatest financial institutions such as Equity Bank started as building societies but today it is a respected financial conglomerate in over 6 countries. What would happen if the founders of Equity Bank had quit.

It is said that winners never quit and quitters never win. The late Dr. Myles Munroe was once called stupid by his teacher and it affected his self esteem. Had it not been his mentor who told him never to define himself by other people's opinions, we would have lost a great author, preacher and advisor to governments around the world. What the examples allude to is that there is power in thoughts. We should master our thoughts. It is only human beings who have the capacity to alter their circumstances and we should not waste that God given potential.

HOW TO MAXIMISE OUR THOUGHTS

1.It begins with God. God is the source of our lives  and therefore we should always consult Him so that we can maximize our God given potential

2.Think long term. Brian Tracy noted in his book 100 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws of Business Success that successful leaders have a long term view about their lives.

3.Develop a positive attitude. Dr. John Maxwell noted that attitude determines altitude. We should be intentional in getting rid of negative attitudes.

4.Associate with the right people who inspire us to think and dream big.

From the above we can conclude that our thoughts have power. Unfortunately we tend to discard the ideas and dreams that we imagine. That is why a university student can decide to divert tuition to gambling instead of maximizing his or her studies.
