TRAPPED IN EVERY PERSON IS A WORLD CHANGER

The late Dr. Myles Munroe, a man I greatly respect and who had a remarkable influence on the world noted that trapped in every street child, a drug addict, a criminal and every person is a great leader. Throughout the world we see many cases of abuse of purpose .On a daily in news papers we see crime in society. What could be the cause? It is related to the abuse of purpose. There has been an increase in gang crime where youths gang up and steal people's property in Kampala and  this is related to ignorance of purpose. A close analysis of people or leaders who have positively impacted the world are characterized by a clear purpose. The lady who dumped her baby in a pit latrine in Kayunga was ignorant of her purpose. The student who gambles their university tuition is ignorant of his or her purpose.

In his book the 100 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws of Business Success, Brian Tracy notes that successful people or leaders think long term and this dictates their actions. The examples highlighted by Dr. Dennis Kimbro in his great book, Think And Grow Rich: A Black Choice inspire the reader to learn something about Oprah Winfrey who despite having been born in a poor family did not lose her vision of becoming a world changer. Against all odds she made it to the top and she is living the American dream. The youths must know that there is nothing that will be achieved on a silver plate or a soft landing. Long term achievements require paying a high price for them. A number of youths have destroyed their future to drugs and reckless living. The adults also "fear to talk to them". due to freedom that exists. There is also freedom in living a disciplined life. Living a disciplined life is painful in the short run but in the long run there is a lot of freedom.

Nelson Mandela was arrested for 27 years but he did not lose his vision of a better world. He had a clear vision. In a nation where majority of the population is below 30 years, it is important for them to learn about leadership .Just like Robin Sharma noted in his book A leader without a title, the youths must take up their space and know that they do not need titles to lead. Perhaps we have a wrong perception of leadership . Leadership is about service but today's youths are more interested in material benefits such as instant money than serving to become wealthy.

A university graduate will want to buy the latest car even without a job. It is very important to dream big but great wealth takes time. This is a message that is disregarded in today's world. I once heard a group of youths who noted that they do not believe in the messages told by entrepreneurs that they began with little capital and today they are successful businessmen and women.

Many youths are invited to capacity building seminars and they refuse to attend because they do not have transport or they will not be given "transport allowance"( I am in trouble because of this statement). However such capacity building opportunities are where one gets the required skills and contacts that are needed in the arena of work. Today organizations and government are investing a lot in skilling youths but many youths are focusing their attention else where. We need to redirect the focus the attention of the youths to things that matter.

Uganda is a very rich country with a lot of potential for transformation. If countries such as Botswana and Singapore who do not have as much resources compared to Uganda are wealthy what would happen if majority of Ugandans discover their leadership potential? We have seen many Chinese and Indians exploiting Uganda's potential yet a majority of citizens view their country as a "waste". We need to change the narrative.

HOW TO REDISCOVER OUR LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL

1.It starts with God who is the author of our lives.

2.Develop a clear vision and purpose for our lives

3.Invest in continuous learning

4.Develop self discipline

5.Think long term

6. Learn from failure and past mistakes

7.Associate with successful people

8.Develop self belief

9.Focus on service

10.Avoid instant gratification

11.Develop humility

12.Embrace coaching and mentorship

Trapped in every follower is a great leader. A market vendor can own a supermarket one day. A street child can become a minister with proper guidance. In a nation where over 70% of the population is below 30 years, the message of leadership development is very important in order to take Uganda to the next level.
