NETWORKING : A KEY INGREDIENT IN EMPLOYMENT CREATION

" I have failed t get a job yet I have good grades is a statement that a young graduate made ". Such statements are very common today. There are over 30 universities in Uganda and they produce over 300,000 graduates per year. Youth unemployment has caused a lot of social challenges including an increase in insecurity.

No one can get a job in isolation. Most people who have jobs were intentional in associating with other successful people. Ask yourself why the most successful entrepreneurs in the city have an association called Kwagalana Group. It helps them to network and share opportunities. Jim Rohn noted that we are the average of the 5 people that we associate with. It is very common to find a university graduate who does not belong to any group. Such a person will miss out on opportunities. We now live in a globalized world and relationships matter . All successful people belong to a number of valuable networks where they learn good communication and leadership skills.

Employers have complained for a long time about the lack of soft skills among the young graduates. Many graduates are good with technical skills but unfortunately soft skills are not emphasized at university. This makes a number of graduates to undermine their value. But if such graduates belonged to clubs such as Toast Masters and Rotary International, they are able to acquire life changing skills. For example employers want to recruit employees who are good at report writing and public speaking. But these skills are missed by many graduates at university.

HOW TO ENHANCE NTWORKING

1.Have a clear purpose for life

2.Embrace life long learning

3.Associate with successful people

4.Start small and from where you are

5.Focus on adding value to society

Networking is very critical in life. Without solid networks getting a dream job can turn out to be cumbersome.
