IS DISCIPLINE RESERVED FOR CHILDREN?

While in traffic jam on a certain road in Kampala I heard a group of boda boda men criticizing their colleague for respecting traffic lights. They asked him whether he was a traffic officer. This is an indicator of how discipline is regarded in certain sections of society. It seems in certain quarters when adults behave in a disciplined way they are viewed as outcasts. Some people dread visiting Mulago Hospital because of the traumatizing scenes of patients whose legs have been amputated because of accidents caused by boda boda cyclists. If one has ever been a passenger on a boda boda in most cases you see just death staring at you. Unfortunately the boda boda sector employs very many youths who tend to take risks.

Why is the concept of discipline an important topic in today's society? It is because over 70% of the population is below 30 years. This group of people prefer instant success. With this we have seen youths who cheat exams so as to pass. We have seen previously well behaved youths joining wrong groups. We have seen youths who miss lectures at campus to attend parties. We have seen youths who disrespect leaders. There are university students who divert tuition to gambling. One time I had to stop a youth who dropped polythene in the environment. This is because it is easier to shape a life while still young. There are even students who drop off from school so as to get quick money. Just last year on the media, they showed tonnes of narcotics that were burnt in Entebbe. These drugs were being smuggled to Europe from Uganda via Entebbe Airport.

The above state of affairs shows why discipline should not be reserved for children. I think nations that have developed have a high level of discipline.

HOW TO PROMOTE DISCIPLINE IN SOCIETY

1.Have faith in God .God is the author of our lives and it is wise to seek His guidance.

2.Long term thinking. Harv Eker in his book Secrets of A Millionaire Mind notes that rich and successful people think long term. This attribute is supported by Brian Tracy in his book, The 100 Absolutely Unbreakable Laws of Business Success.

3.Mentors and Coaches. No one succeeds by accident. Successful people are intentional in seeking guidance from proven and successful mentors.
